An air compressor is a device that converts power (using electric motors, diesel or gasoline engines, etc.) into potential energy stored in compressed air (ie, compressed air). Through one of several methods, the air compressor forces more and more air into the air storage tank, thereby increasing the pressure. When the tank pressure reaches its design upper limit, the air compressor will shut down. Then, the compressed air will remain in the tank until it is used. The energy contained in compressed air can be used in various applications, using the kinetic energy of air release and tank decompression. When the fuel tank pressure reaches its lower limit, the air compressor will turn on again and repressurize the fuel tank. The air compressor must be distinguished from the pump because it is suitable for any gas/air, while the pump is for liquid.

Compressors can be classified according to the delivered pressure:

Low pressure air compressor (LPAC) with a discharge pressure of 150 psi or less
Medium pressure compressor with discharge pressure from 151 psi to 1,000 psi
High pressure air compressor (HPAC) with discharge pressure higher than 1,000 psi
