Sportening--a social media app for players to have access to chatrooms, information and stats as well as to rate players after games--has raised a $7 million seed funding round that also includes an investment via Real Madrid star Luka Modri?. The startup social platform aims to connect fans with fan bases of specific sports teams.

The company has 250,000 current users , mainly located in the US, UK and Italy and hopes to attract 6 million fans to join the platform in 2023. Sportening was founded in Modri?'s hometown of Croatia and is the first company to receive an investment from the soccer star in an announcement in the press.

Modri? who was the winner of the 2018 Ballon d'Or award, joins Superbet Group founder Sacha Dragic, PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel's Clarium Capital and former Sequoia Capital Global Equities COO Ralph Ho as investors in Sportening. Sportening is primarily geared towards soccer fans but is looking to expand its services to include basketball and American football fans as well.
