Advantages of injection molding in automotive applications
Injection molding is a mature production process. Automotive mold manufacturers inject molten plastic material into the mold cavity. Then the molten plastic cools and hardens, and the manufacturer extracts the finished product. Although the Automotive mold design process is critical and challenging (improperly designed molds can lead to defects), injection molding itself is a reliable method to produce solid plastic parts with high-quality finishes.
The following are several reasons why this process is beneficial to the production of automotive plastic parts:
1. Repeatability
In the automotive industry, repeatability—or the ability to consistently produce the same parts—is critical. Since automotive plastic injection molding usually relies on strong metal molds, the final molded car parts produced using this mold are actually the same. Certain factors will affect injection molding, but if Automotive mold has good design and finishing, injection molding is a highly repeatable process.
2. Scale and cost
Due to the cost of Automotive mold, the injection mold manufacturing process can be an expensive process. However, it is still a highly scalable process, and as manufacturers make more parts, its total cost will decrease. For mass production applications, injection molding is therefore beneficial to manufacturers. However, for anything that is not mass-produced, the cost of the injection mold may inhibit the cost efficiency of the process.
