A scholarship is a privilege that any student would be grateful to have. It takes the pressure off parents and families that may have a hard time trying to pay their children way through school or college. Of course, this does not mean that scholarships are only given to students from financially ailing backgrounds. There are also scholarships that are meted out on the basis of merit, skill, talent, and promise that a student displays.
Scholarships handed out by the Government, Public and Private educational institutes such as schools, colleges, universities, etc alike. Students that are deemed fit by the organization in question are awarded financial aid.
9 GEMS Holistic Development Scholarship :
One such scholarship is the 9 GEMS Scholarship. It is devised according to the GIIS 9 GEMS framework. This framework strives to create a much-needed balance between academics and non – academics i.e. extracurricular activities in or order to give the student a wholesome and fruitful learning experience. This scholarship is given out by the Global Indian International School which is a well-known Kuala Lumpur International School. The criteria to be eligible for this scholarship are purely talent-based.
To be clearer, the scholarship is given to students who show excellence in the different 9 GEMS skills. These skills consist of Sports, Music, Dance, Instrumental Music, Martial Arts, Literary Competitions, Drawing and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM).
It is applicable to the students from the 1st to the 12th grades following the IGCSE or CBSE curriculum. It is a one-year-long scholarship.
Eligibility Criteria that MUST be met :
There are certain benchmarks or ‘criteria’ that each student has to comply with in order to be declared eligible. Let’s take a quick look at them.
- The student applicant must be a Malaysian Citizen (PR / Dependent Pass / Student Pass Holders).
- Their academic performance of the past year is taken into consideration.
- Receiving recognition for any:
- International 9 GEMS Skills event (applicable for a 60 % tuition waiver),
- A National 9 GEMS event (applicable for a 40 % tuition waiver),
- And lastly, a 9 GEMS event held in the State (applicable for a 20 % tuition fee waiver).
If all the criteria that were mentioned above are met, then the student will be called in for a scholarship test and an interview.
All of the rules, benchmarks, and tests are merely indicators of how important a scholarship can be and the world of difference that it can make in the life of a student. This is why, it is no surprise that the screening process is long because it is the organization's – in this case, GIIS’s responsibility to ensure that the child that receives the financial aid truly deserves and proves worth it.
