A Quick Guide To Multisim

Multisim is a circuit simulation software that enables accurate analysis, testing, and visualization of circuit behavior.

.

Circuit analysis is an essential aspect of electrical and electronics engineering. It allows one to understand the behaviour and the response of a circuit it’s elements under particular conditions and application of different kinds of input. It may not always be possible to analyze or test a circuit using dedicated power sources and actual testing equipment. Multisim is a circuit simulation software that enables accurate analysis, testing and visualization of circuit behaviour.

Built on SPICE, one of the most potent and popular circuit simulation software, Multisim allows easy design and input of various circuit topologies and specification of simulation data. Numerous educational institutions use Multisim to train and teach students about network theory analyses, steady-state dynamic response, and various circuit analysis kinds. Multisim assignments can help students learn how to handle the simulator better and develop their circuit analysis skills.

This article is a guide to some of the most commonly used features of Multisim. It also lays down the necessary steps to a simple DC circuit analysis.

Multisim Components

Circuit editing is one of the essential features of any simulator. In Multisim, a blank schematic page acts as the drawing board for crafting any circuit. Toolbars list the standard options for saving, loading and importing/exporting circuit simulations from different sources.

A separate section of the toolbar is dedicated to the different kinds of circuit components, adding to a particular circuit. These include resistors, sources, inductors, capacitors, electronic devices such as diodes, bipolar junction transistors, complementary metal-oxide semiconductors, junction semiconductors, thyristors, power diodes, power bjts, etc.

Another section of note is the Results section, which shows the responses or the circuit's output.

DC Testing a Circuit

The steps to set up one of the simplest circuit, a DC resistive circuit, are as follows:

  • The DC voltage source is to be placed on the blank schematic page at first. Select it from Sources(from the component’s toolbar) à DC_Power à Power Sources à DC_Power. You can select any number of sources for your circuit.
  • Next up, go to Basic and select the kind of resistor you wish to add to your circuit. Choose between RATED VIRTUAL RESISTOR and standard RESISTOR set. The primary difference between the two is that virtual resistors can have any value, while regular resistors can only have commercial values.
  • After setting up the ground at the appropriate place, we connect the source and the ground with resistors' different chosen components.
  • Once done, carry out DC Operating Point Analysis from Simulate àAnalyses à DC Operating Point.

Multisim Instruments

The software offers numerous components to simulate different kinds of circuits and various instruments to simulate different tests types.

Some of the most potent measurement instruments on the simulation software are:

  1. Voltmeter with the option to modify its internal resistance in series
  2. Ammeters with internal resistance in parallel
  3. Multimeters
  4. Oscilloscope to measure output signal waveform
  5. Wattmeter for power measurement
  6. Probe to measure any signal in a circuit
  7. Breadboard circuit simulation schematic

Well, that’s all the space we have for today. Let’s hope this article was able to offer you some idea about Multisim and how it works. Practice designing circuits using Multisim more and seek genuine Multisim assignment help online from reputed services only.

Summary: Multisim is a powerful circuit simulation tool and finds wide applications across different disciplines. This article looks into the workings of the simulator in brief details.
