Although most standard ball valves are designed with special stop measures that only allow 90-degree rotation, some ball valves can provide a complete 360-degree rotation. Technically speaking, a 90-degree rotation is all that is required to open and close the ball valve, but in some applications, it is even more necessary to make the core move completely. The reliable and airtight seal of the ball valve in the closed position is an important industrial choice. This makes them particularly suitable for transporting powerful chemicals or gases that need to be safely and quickly shut down, such as the natural gas industry. However, they should not be used in highly throttling applications, as the continued wear of the seat can compromise its integrity.
The movement of the ball describes three main types of ball valves:
Trunnion Mounted Ball Valve-This type of ball valve includes an additional mechanical anchoring system on its top and bottom, making it more suitable for applications involving higher pressures. This is because the included valve stem mounted on the trunnion absorbs the extra thrust or pressure from the pipeline and prevents any excessive friction, which would otherwise affect operation and shorten the service life.
Float valve-The float valve does not have the additional stabilizing component of the trunnion, but is only connected to the valve stem. This gave the floating ball valve its own name, because it would "float" the ball downstream of the flow, thereby pressing the ball against the seat to form its own seal.
Rising ball valve-This type of ball valve uses a tilt and rotation process to reduce the chance of seal friction-seal friction is one of the main factors for premature valve failure. When the valve is turned to the closed position, the spool will wedge into its seat to fully close. When the valve is turned to the open position, the center core will tilt away from the seal to allow the liquid or gas flow to pass evenly.
