Many animal species need protection since they are in danger of extinction. The cheetah is among them. Only a small number of cheetahs remains on Earth today. Therefore, this animal should be protected. The wild fauna will become impoverished without the cheetah, a unique representative of the family Felidae. This family includes 36 species of cats different in size. The cheetah is bigger than the domestic cat. However, its size is significantly smaller when compared to big cats such as lions or jaguars. Due to its body structure, the cheetah runs faster than any other land animal in the world. Its top speed reaches 110 kilometers per hour. Moreover, unlike other big cats, the cheetah can purr. Taking into account the distinctive features of the cheetah, we, as true animal lovers, cannot let this amazing cat become extinct.
Earlier, many cheetahs inhabited the entire African continent and most parts of Asia. These areas with tall grass and semi-arid climates are the most favorable habitat for the cheetah. Open habitats allow this animal to clearly detect both prey and predators. The population of cheetahs was about 100,000. However, since 1900, the number of cheetahs has begun to rapidly decline. The cheetah has been endangered for more than a hundred years. According to the recent estimates, less than 10,000 cheetahs exist in the world. They mainly inhabit Sub-Saharan Africa. Approximately 100 cheetahs also live in Iran.
Many factors have contributed to the cheetah's endangered status. The most significant of them is harmful human activities. Due to the increase in human population, many wild lands have been completely destroyed to meet people’s needs. As a result, the cheetah is deprived of its natural habitat. The shrinking of habitat has led to the decrease in the number of cheetahs. The destruction of wild lands has left the cheetah not only without its habitat but also without food. This cat lacks prey for good nutrition. Since the cheetah is a carnivore, it hunts such animals as impalas, rabbits, and antelopes. Therefore, the decline in prey has resulted in the disappearance of cheetahs. Moreover, conflicts with people and illegal trade lead to the cheetah’s endangerment. The cheetah often approaches private farmlands in search of food and threatens a farmer’s livestock. As farmers strive to protect their resources, they shoot the cheetah without hesitation. It is easy to kill this cat because it hunts during the day, and farmers can clearly see it. Furthermore, some time ago rich people kept cheetahs in captivity. They used these cats for hunting. Since cheetahs do not breed well in such conditions, their number decreased. In addition, the mortality rate is high among cheetah cubs because hyenas as well as lions hunt and kill them.
Currently, the main task of humanity is to prevent the extinction of the cheetah. People should protect this animal and do their best to increase the number of cheetahs. Firstly, it will promote biodiversity on Earth. Secondly, the cheetah is the only living member of the genus Acinonyx; therefore, it should be saved.
The cheetah is a unique animal with its distinctive features. Its number considerably dwindled in recent years. Consequently, all people should do everything possible to create favorable conditions for cheetahs to breed. Any animal, including the cheetah, should not suffer from human activities.
