What can we have in our lives? We poor people have nothing without dignity and self-respect. For women it is even more difficult to earn respect in this male-controlled society. People reward the father every time their kid does something good but they always say bad things about the mother when there is a conflict.

What haven’t I done for my elder daughter? Everything I could do, that a human could do as a mother, I tried to do for her. I got married at a very early age and she is the gift; whom I brought to earth while fighting with my death. I was nearly dying when she was born. When I gave birth to her I was only 12 years old. I struggled my whole life to see her happy. But she didn’t understand my struggle in life and at 15 years old she flew away with a boy. She left me and didn't think about me. Because of her I had to receive a lot of badmouthing from people. Even her father didn’t stop yelling at me. He told me several times, “because of you she did this.”

This is my younger daughter. She is only two years old but people already have started saying bad things. They always remind me of the saying “where the first plow goes the second one follows.” I am worried and now my only wish is that she will understand my situation. - Aleya Begum 30
