Bluetooth Speakers: History, Types and Features to Consider
The first Bluetooth speaker was developed in the late 1990s by Ericsson in Sweden. Called Bluetooth, it was envisioned as a wireless alternative to RS-232 data cables. The name "Bluetooth" was inspired by Harald Bluetooth, a 10th-century king known for uniting Scandinavia. The technology was designed to connect cellular phones, fax machines, laptops, PCs, printers, digital cameras and other devices easily via a secure short-range wireless link.
Initially launched for data transfer, Bluetooth audio streaming became possible with later versions. One of the earliest Bluetooth speaker models came in 2004 from Swedish company Bjorn designed for streaming music wirelessly from phones and other devices. It spurred many other companies to launch their own portable Bluetooth speakers over the next decade as the technology evolved and became more mainstream.
