What is Electronic Toll Collection?
A toll road or tollway is a private or public road for which a fee is assessed for passage. Traditionally, tolls were collected in cash from drivers at barriers called toll booths. However, with the advent of electronic toll collection (ETC) technologies, many toll roads have eliminated toll booths entirely. ETC allows drivers to pay tolls without stopping. A transponder mounted in the vehicle communicates with readers at toll points, and the appropriate toll is automatically deducted from the user's pre-paid account.
