Waste To Energy: An Innovative Way to Deal with Municipal Solid Waste

Waste to energy, also known as energy from waste (EfW), is a process of generating energy in the form of electricity or heat from the primary treatment of waste. It involves the combustion of waste and is a form of energy recovery. Waste that is generally used includes municipal solid waste (MSW) which includes everyday items we use and then throw away such as packaging, food scraps, grass clippings, soiled paper, and more.

How does Waste to Energy work?

Waste to energy works through a process of combustion. The municipal solid waste is collected from bins and brought to a waste to energy plant. At the plant, the waste is checked and processed to remove any hazardous materials. It is then fed into a furnace where it is burned at temperatures of over 850 degrees Celsius. This high temperature combustion breaks down the waste into ash, flare gases and steam. The steam is then used to power turbines which generate electricity. The ash that remains after combustion contains inorganic residues of the original waste mixture. This ash needs to be securely landfilled as it may contain heavy metals.
