Nature's Miracle Cells: The Potential of Stem Cell Research
Stem cells are the body's raw materials - the fundamental cells from which all specialized cells, tissues and organs develop. In a sense they are nature's healing agents, ready to multiply and replenish other cells as long as we live. There are two broad types of stem cells: adult (or somatic) stem cells and embryonic stem cells.
Adult Stem Cells
Adult stem cells are found in small numbers in many tissues including bone marrow, brain, blood, skin, muscles and liver. Their main role is to maintain and repair the tissue in which they are found. For example, adult stem cells in bone marrow regenerate blood cells throughout our life. They can multiply by cell division, sometimes after injury or to replenish dying cells, but their ability to differentiate into other cell types is limited.
