Antibodies: Nature's Defence Mechanism Against Foreign Invaders

What Are Antibodies?

Antibodies, also known as immunoglobulins, are Y-shaped proteins produced by plasma cells that are part of the immune system. When pathogens such as bacteria or viruses enter the body, the immune system deploys antibodies to recognize and neutralize these foreign invaders.

Types of Antibodies
There are five major classes of antibodies that serve different functions in the immune response. The main types include:

- IgG: This is the most common type of antibody found in blood and extracellular fluid. IgG antibodies help protect the body from bacterial and viral infections.

- IgM: IgM is usually the first antibody to be produced when the immune system encounters new antigens or invading microbes. IgM plays a key role in activating the complement system.

- IgA: IgA antibodies are mainly found in secretions such as tears, breast milk, saliva and mucus. IgA provides immune protection for these entry points into the body.
