What is Computational Fluid Dynamics?

Computational fluid dynamics, commonly referred to as CFD, is a branch of fluid mechanics that uses numerical methods and algorithms to analyze and solve problems that involve fluid flows. Some common examples of fluid flows include air moving around aircraft wings, gases flowing through power generation turbines, water streaming around boats and ships. By using CFD, engineers can simulate fluid flow problems and gain insight into how fluids will behave in real-world applications.

Governing Equations in CFD

At the core of any CFD analysis are the governing equations that describe fluid motion. The two most common equations are the Navier-Stokes equations, which model viscous fluid flow, and the Euler equations, which model inviscid flow. These partial differential equations express the conservation of mass, momentum, and energy through a control volume over time. Solving the governing equations numerically is central to any CFD simulation.
