Molybdenum is a silvery-grey metal that is quite hard yet highly ductile. It has a high melting point of 2,610°C (4,730°F) and boiling point of 4,639°C (8,382°F). On the Mohs hardness scale, molybdenum ranks 6 out of 10 for hardness. Some key physical properties that make molybdenum useful industrially include its high strength even at elevated temperatures, resistance to corrosion from acids and gases, and low thermal and electrical conductivity.

The high melting point and strength retention at elevated temperatures make molybdenum an ideal metal for applications involving intense heat. It is used to construct components for modern furnaces, fired heaters, boilers and other industrial equipment that must endure high operating temperatures. Molybdenum alloying improves the strength and creep resistance of steel and superalloys used in jet and rocket engine parts. Thin molybdenum coatings provide protection to tungsten metal parts in high-temperature lighting applications like halogen lamps and flashbulbs.
