In the last game of the 1967 season, the Tigers played a one-game playoff against the Red Sox for the pennant. McLain was given the ball, but pitched ineffectively, with earlier claimed his left foot was severely hurt after stubbing his toes when his foot fell asleep. The Tigers lost and consequently missed the playoffs. In May 1968, McLain whined about Detroit's supporters, saying they helped shed the pennant for them the past year. These comments came out following McLain's fourth straight CG victory. He was quoted:"If they think we're dumb for playing this game, how dumb are they for watching us? "From the end of July, McLain had a record of 21-3.
The Tigers dropped the last two matches of McLain's season, both by scores of 1-2. After the series, McLain said to the press:"I would not trade one Bob Gibson for twelve Mickey Loliches. McLain was also a regular guest on talk shows and played with Vegas performances as an organist, adding to his already-ridiculous major-league wages, and became the richest, and most famous, guy in baseball.
